The Father’s Love: A Journey From Head to Heart

What does it mean to know someone’s heart? Can we really, deeply know someone’s heart? You can’t know a person’s heart without first knowing them. It takes time, words, actions, and a shared journey to fully understand. In the same way, we come to know the heart of God by seeing how He treats us—His children.

But what kind of Father is He? For some, hearing the word “father” brings up memories that are painful or complicated. Some had fathers that were distant, passive, or harsh. Others had performance-driven fathers who gave love based on success. Still, others had fathers who inflicted harm rather than love, leaving wounds that last into adulthood.

Reflection Questions:

  • What memories or emotions come to mind when you think about the word “father”? How does that shape your understanding of God as a Father?

We know these things in our minds—God is not like that. But the question remains: is that truth making any difference in your actual life? Are you connected to the Father’s love, not just in your head, but in your heart? There is an entire universe of difference between knowing something intellectually and experiencing it deeply.

Reflection Questions:

  • What areas of your life feel disconnected from the Father’s love? How might connecting your heart to His love begin to transform those areas?

The Longest Journey: Head to Heart

Look, here’s some hard truth: the longest journey you’ll ever take is the 18 inches from your head to your heart. God’s love is so vast, so immense, that it will take an eternity for us to understand it. But don’t let that overwhelm you. There are real, tangible steps you can take today to connect with that love. That connection starts with understanding the Father’s heart, and that begins with scripture.

Reflection Question:

  • What keeps you from fully experiencing God’s love in your heart rather than just knowing it in your mind?

Knowing The Father Through His Word

The Bible is God speaking—His self-revelation to us. If we are to truly know the Father’s love, we cannot bypass scripture. It’s not a question of whether God desires to be known as our Father. His entire Word is an invitation to engage with Him relationally.

This journey to knowing the Father’s heart has to be anchored in scripture. One passage that communicates His love powerfully is the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15. The story is well known, yet every time, it reaches deeper into our understanding of God’s fatherly nature. It reveals something profound: God is willing to meet you wherever you are—no matter how far you’ve gone.

Reflection Question:

  • How often do you intentionally spend time in God’s Word? What’s one step you can take this week to deepen that practice?

The Prodigal Son: A Story of Coming Home

This story of the prodigal son might feel familiar. At its core, it’s about a son who asks his father for his inheritance early. In doing so, he essentially wishes his father dead. The father, miraculously and painfully, honors the request. After receiving the money, the son leaves, squanders everything in reckless living, and finds himself at rock bottom, penniless and broken.

Yet, the true beauty of that story is not in the pain—it’s in the return. The son journeys home, fully expecting to be rejected, and instead, he’s met with compassion, not condemnation. His father runs to him, embraces him, and throws a grand celebration. The father doesn’t hold the past over his son’s head. Instead, he restores him immediately.

That’s the Father’s love for you. It’s a love that pursues you relentlessly, even when you’ve distanced yourself.

Reflection Question:

  • When you think of the Father running to meet the prodigal son, how does that image change your view of God?

From Lost to Found

I have a personal story that parallels the prodigal son. My mother’s involvement with the Jehovah’s Witnesses—a group that values performance and legalism—shaped my understanding of God as I was growing up in a fatherless home. There was a constant pressure to prove my worth to God, and without realizing it, that shaped how I saw the world and myself.

By my teens, I was burned out. The weight of performance was too much, and when I couldn’t carry it anymore, I rebelled—hard. I was shunned. I walked away from everything, knowing in the back of my mind what it meant. The world promised fulfillment and freedom, but let me tell you, I quickly found emptiness instead. Just like the prodigal son, I sought love in places where love didn’t exist.

That’s when God began doing what He always does. He pursued me. Even at my lowest—my own rock bottom—God found me. It wasn’t some grand church service that changed everything. It was in a quiet, raw moment when the Holy Spirit broke through the darkness and whispered to my heart: “You are loved.”

The love of the Father is relentless.

Reflection Questions:

  • Can you identify a moment when you felt far from God but realized He was pursuing you? What was that like for you?

Celebration, Not Condemnation

The parable of the prodigal son doesn’t only focus on the younger son’s rebellion—there’s also the older brother, who had stayed behind. The father’s lavish love for the disobedient son upset the older brother. He was angry that after all his hard work, there was no celebration for him.

What the older brother missed—and we sometimes do, too—is that trying to perform your way into the Father’s heart will always lead to frustration. The truth you need to know today is that the Father’s love cannot be earned. It’s freely given.

Sometimes, we live like the older brother. We forget that God’s love is already ours, wrapped up and waiting for us to accept it with open hands. But just like the younger son had to experience the father’s love firsthand before it changed his life, so must we.

Reflection Question:

  • Do you sometimes live like the older brother, trying to earn God’s love through performance? How might embracing God’s grace set you free from that mindset?

How Do We Connect with the Father’s Love?

Here’s what matters: We don’t just think about the Father’s love, we experience it. It’s the only thing that can fill the empty places in us.

How? It starts with these steps:

  1. Read, Study, and meditate on Scripture
Engage with God’s Word daily. Let it remind you of the depth of His love for you. Jeremiah 31:3 says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” It’s through these promises we replace the lies that have settled in our hearts over time.
  2. Find True Christian Community
You need others. Sometimes we think we can do this alone, but isolation hurts us. Surround yourself with a community that reflects the Father’s love—a band of brothers and sisters who can support, encourage, and speak truth into your life.
  3. Invite the Holy Spirit to Open Your Heart
The most crucial point is asking the Holy Spirit to usher you into the Father’s love. You’ve already received this love according to Romans 5:5, “…God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” Sometimes, we just need to open that gift and enter into it experientially.

Reflection Question:

  • What is one practical step you can take today to experience the Father’s love more deeply?

The Father’s Unstoppable Pursuit

Let me leave you with this: God’s love for you is not conditional on your behavior, your past, or your present circumstances. He’s not sitting back, waiting for you to impress Him. Like the father in the parable, He’s watching the road, ready to run toward you at the first sign that you’ve come to your senses, longing for home.

Reflect on that. What would it look like for you to surrender, to stop performing, and just receive the Father’s love in your life today?

Ask the Holy Spirit to break open your heart and flood it with the reality of His affection for you. He’s not holding back.

We all have moments of struggle and rebellion. But no matter where you are—whether you’re still in the distant country or trudging your way back home—the Father’s love is already here, waiting, pursuing, and ready to embrace you fully.

Reflection Questions:

  • In what ways is the Father’s love already pursuing you? How can you let go of trying to earn His love and simply receive it today?
