A reminder that even in turbulent times, we can find peace in what lasts

Holding Fast to What Endures

There’s something powerful about searching for what lasts. In a world filled with chaos, shifting trends, sudden twists, and fleeting moments, you can’t help but wonder—what really stays firm? What doesn’t just vanish when the wind blows a little too hard?

It’s a question that echoes throughout our lives. Whether we notice it or not, most of us are looking for something steady to hold onto. We might be running errands or chasing deadlines, but there’s a deeper pull in our hearts. We long for something that won’t fade or disappoint—something that endures.

And that’s what we’re exploring today.

Here’s the full message. You can watch it here:

In today’s message, I want to look at the tension between what’s temporary and what lasts forever. We won’t find the answer by examining whatever the latest news story is, nor by scrolling Instagram or binging Netflix. Instead, we look to the Word and to Christ—the one who promises stability and hope in a world that feels shaky at best.

Reflection Questions:

  • What are the key things in your life that you consider unshakable?
  • How do they provide you with strength during challenging times?

Searching for What Lasts

You know that feeling when you lose something small—your keys or maybe your wallet—and you suddenly realize just how fragile your ordinary life can be? But then, zoom out for a second. What about those bigger moments where life itself starts to feel unstable—when relationships are strained, careers uncertain, or health worries start creeping in?

In those times, everything that seemed so secure can begin to feel temporary. Whether we’re talking about career success, wealth, or even personal achievements, there’s this nagging reality: all these things eventually fade. They aren’t bad in and of themselves, but they aren’t built to last. Most days we face “left-my-coffee-on-the-car-roof” kinds of storms, when what we really need is an anchor—something unshakable.

Which brings us to Jesus. In Hebrews 7:23-28, the writer paints a stunning picture of Jesus’ priesthood. Unlike human priests, who came, served, and eventually passed away, Jesus holds his role forever. He is “able to save completely those who come to God through him,” or as some translations say, “He can save to the uttermost.”

That word, “uttermost,” sticks with me. Imagine something that holds on tight, no gaps, no cracks. Jesus isn’t partial in his promise. He offers complete salvation—something that doesn’t crumble under the weight of life’s storms.

Reflection Questions:

  • In what ways have you experienced the fleeting nature of life?
  • How can recognizing this help you focus on what truly matters?

What’s Holding You Firm?

An anchor in stormy waters representing Jesus as our eternal anchor.
In life’s storms, Jesus serves as our unshakeable anchor

Most of us face storms that feel a little less epic than saving Middle Earth from Sauron’s armies. Life might throw us smaller challenges, but that doesn’t make them feel any less overwhelming. Whether it’s managing scrambled schedules, financial stress, or simply getting through the daily grind, our lives are made up of moments when we just need something steady.

It’s like a ship trying to find its footing in rough waters. Imagine it for a moment—a boat swaying in the storm, waves crashing against it, winds howling. The only thing keeping that ship from drifting away into chaos is a well-planted anchor. That’s how the Bible describes Jesus. He’s not just a temporary shelter or a quick fix in the middle of disaster. He’s a secure, deep anchor in something solid, something eternal.

Hebrews 7:25 reminds us of this reality. “He is able to save completely those who come to God through him.” He’s not here just for the short-term; he’s here for the long haul.

What about you? What’s your anchor right now? Is it in the temporary comforts of life or in the deep, lasting promises of God?

Reflection Questions:

  • What anchors your life during storms or uncertainties?
  • Are there areas where you might be relying on temporary comforts instead of lasting foundations?

The Greatest Commandment: Roots that Go Deeper

Hands holding a heart-shaped stone representing love in faith.
Love is the bedrock of our faith and relationships

In Mark 12:28-34, Jesus is asked a simple question: Which commandment is the greatest?

He replies with something we’ve heard before, but maybe haven’t considered fully: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” And then, he adds, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

The simplicity of this statement belies its depth. Jesus is giving us a roadmap for a life that’s anchored in eternity. To love God and love others isn’t just to follow a rule, but to root ourselves in something beyond this temporary moment. When we love God fully—with every part of who we are—we step into something that doesn’t pass away.

And then, there’s that second part: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” It sounds so basic, but lived out, it’s anything but easy. It requires humility, selflessness, and the willingness to see others the way God sees them. These aren’t just behaviors; they’re foundations for a life that lasts. In loving God and loving others, we’re planting seeds that will grow into something far beyond us.

Do you ever wonder if you’re investing in things that won’t last? Whether it’s in relationships, your career, or how you spend your time, what are you planting that will bear fruit beyond today?

Reflection Questions:

  • How does loving God and others change your perspective on everyday challenges?
  • In what ways can you deepen these relationships in your life?

Christ: The Eternal Anchor in Life’s Chaos

Here’s a truth worth holding onto: life gets messy. We all know that. But Jesus offers us something firm—a foundation that doesn’t shift when circumstances do.

When I think about storms in my own life, I’m reminded of those moments when everything feels shaky. Uncertainty had me questioning, doubting, and reaching for quick fixes—like a late-night snack to dull the stress instead of turning to prayer or scripture. But here’s the thing: while the quick solutions gave momentary comfort, they didn’t last. Peace only came when I returned to Christ.

That sense of being anchored doesn’t come from the storm easing up. No, it comes from realizing that Jesus is steady—no matter what’s happening around us.

Oswald Chambers put it like this: “Faith is deliberate confidence in the character of God whose ways you may not understand at the time.”

Even when we don’t fully grasp why life looks the way it does, even when it’s hard, we can trust God’s unchanging character. He’s steady. He’s firm.

When life feels uncertain this week—and chances are, at some point, it will—try to pause and remember Jesus as your anchor. Reach for one of God’s promises. Maybe the promise of his unwavering presence, his provision, or his peace. Let that promise anchor you, even if just for a moment.

Reflection Questions:

  • Reflect on a recent moment of chaos or uncertainty in your life.
  • How did you seek peace during that time?
  • How can you turn to Christ as your anchor in future challenges?

Living with an Eternal Perspective

A serene path in a lush forest symbolizing the journey of faith.
Every step we take in love and faith leads us closer to eternity

So, what’s the takeaway here? It’s simple, but not easy: love God and love others. This is how we root ourselves in eternity.

We’re here on earth for a short time. Are we focusing our energy on fleeting pursuits or lasting relationships? There’s nothing wrong with success, but if we forget the eternal perspective—the call to love—we’re building our lives on sand. And we all know how sand castles end.

Instead, Jesus calls us to build on something stronger. To plant seeds that will grow, even if we don’t see the fruit immediately. Each small act of love—whether it’s a kind word, a listening ear, or a moment of prayer—plants a seed that will last.

It’s not about getting it all right. You’ll fail. We all do. But that’s part of the journey—just keep trying. Over time, you’ll bear fruit that endures.

Reflection Questions:

  • What daily practices can you implement to cultivate an eternal perspective?
  • How can you ensure that your actions reflect this perspective in your relationships and decisions?
