The greatest breakthroughs in life and faith don’t come when we figure it all out. They come when we burn the plow and trust God with the next step.
If you’ve been stuck between comfort and calling—this is your wake-up call to move forward.
Don’t have time to read? Listen to the podcast!

Sometimes the only way forward is to burn the plow behind you.
We all hit that moment—when God calls, and we have to decide: do we stay with what’s safe, or step into something scary but sacred?
That tension is ancient. It shows up in Scripture, but also in our careers, our relationships, and our personal growth.
And the people who thrive? They’re the ones who stop looking backward.
This article is for anyone who feels the call to live differently—but needs the courage to walk forward.
1. Burn the Plow: Answering the Call Fully
God’s calling doesn’t come with a return policy.
In 1 Kings 19:19–21, the prophet Elijah throws his cloak over Elisha—a symbolic gesture that marks him as a prophet-in-training. Elisha’s response? He slaughters his oxen, burns his plow, and walks away from the only life he’s ever known.
This isn’t just flair. It’s finality.
He gives up his livelihood, his fallback plan, his comfort. Because following God’s call isn’t about hedging your bets. It’s about burning the bridge back to where you were.
👉 Action Tip: Identify what “plows” you’re still holding onto. That old job? A relationship that no longer aligns with your purpose? Burn it. That’s how you make room for what God’s building next.

2. Walk by the Spirit: Freedom Requires Focus

The most dangerous kind of slavery is the kind that feels like freedom.
In Galatians 5:1, Paul writes:
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (ESV).
But then he adds a twist: freedom isn’t doing whatever you want—it’s walking in step with the Holy Spirit.
The fruit of that kind of life?
Love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. Goodness. Faithfulness. Gentleness. Self-control (Gal. 5:22–23).
And here’s the part people miss:
You don’t achieve the fruit of the Spirit. You yield to it.
👉 Action Tip: If your life feels chaotic, don’t try harder. Slow down. Ask the Spirit to lead. Then listen.
🔄 Mistake to Avoid: Don’t confuse spiritual activity with spiritual health. They aren’t the same.

3. Eyes on the Road: Following Jesus Without Conditions
Jesus never asked for part-time followers.
In Luke 9:57–62, three would-be disciples approach Jesus with great intentions—but also conditions.
One wants comfort. One wants to wait. One wants to say goodbye first.
Jesus’s response?
“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62, ESV).
That line stings. And it should.
You can’t move forward while staring in the rearview mirror.
👉 Action Tip: Write down what you’re still looking back at. Then physically rip it up or throw it out. Rituals matter when you’re trying to move forward.
🔄 Mistake to Avoid: Don’t romanticize the past. Comfort isn’t the same as calling.

Final Thought & Actionable Challenge

“I have set the Lord always before me… in your presence there is fullness of joy.” – Psalm 16:8,11 (ESV)
The path forward may look uncertain. But it’s marked by something better than clarity—it’s marked by presence.
And where He leads, He stays.
Here’s your challenge:
This week, burn one plow.
Choose one habit, relationship, or excuse that’s keeping you stuck—and get rid of it.
Then tell someone what you did. Invite accountability. Give the Spirit space to grow something new.
You don’t need a perfect roadmap.
Just eyes forward.
Feet moving.
And a heart that says yes.
